He should have taken Otis's pack "Come on, let me take it or they'll get us both! As it was, he lost most of the time he bought with Otis's death fighting with Otis and then being even more hurt in the last part of his escape.
My husband replied that Shane was unable to think about it at that level because he couldn't think about what he was about to do - that even though he knew it was necessary that leaving Otis like that was still reprehensible to him. So he acted without thinking. I completely agree with Kevlar that a different strategy would have negated the necessity completely. It could have even kept Shane from his downward moral spiral. It's interesting because I was just re-watching this part of the show and Otis says a bunch of stuff about how he knew he was slowing shane down and pretty much knew he wasn't going to make it out of there alive. So in a weird way Otis was practically begging shane to shoot him.
I wound up judging shane a little less for shooting otis the second time watching the ep, which is uncharacteristic for me because i'm typically pretty pro-rick, anti-shane. H5N1 Moderator. Joined: Oct 19, Messages: 19, Likes Received: This act was the demise of Shane.

Shinra Member. Joined: Apr 4, Messages: 48 Likes Received: 2. This show is unclear with how the walkers even manage to keep up with survivors who are supposedly running at full pelt. They shouldn't be hard to outrun but this seemingly isn't the case.
They either stay just ahead of them when they're running or they stay just ahead of them when they're limping. The show can't keep it consistent so I just kinda ignore it to be honest. If the implied reason for Shane shooting Otis in the leg is that they wouldn't have gotten away otherwise, I'll take that with a pinch of salt.
This argument could go on all day otherwise. You must log in or sign up to post here. Show Ignored Content. Share This Page Tweet. Your name or email address: Do you already have an account?

Please, I need to hear, I need to know his death had meaning " —Patricia begging Shane to describe her husband's final moments.
Praise be to Him, for the gift of our brother Otis, for his span of years, for his abundance of character; Otis, who gave his life to save a child's, now more than ever, our most precious asset. We thank You, God, for the peace he enjoys in Your embrace.
He died as he lived: in grace. It had to be him. One shot to the leg, Carl lives. Reality is he had no business being here--there I think he left him behind and I think I think he did it not just to save Carl but because he loves me. Tell another story?

I don't think he had to do that to Otis, him as bait sounded good to. In life there's always choices, though it is a tv show, the ultimate sacrifice would have been himself. When push comes to shove, we all just want to survive. Linz94 picked He had to do it He do it because Otis was delayed him. I think he shoot to Otis because Shane want to safe Carl. I don't blame him about what he did. I will doing the same if I was on this situation like Shane.
He injured that poor man then let thoes zombies feast on him while he was still alive!!!!! That's not heroic or merciful or whatever excuse you want to fill your head with because you like the guy can't understand why. And are you forgetting how many times Otis stuck his neck out for that loser?!? Shane is a monster who deserves to be punished big time!!!!
I don't think he had to do it, I saw Otis pick Shane up and hold him up too. I don't think he slowed him down What Shane did was just cold He could have been merciful and killed him He deserves anything bad coming his way now, I feel!
Shane has been going down the slippery slop since Rick returned but this was beyond asshood. Otis could have easily escaped but came to Shane's rescue but for what? Shane was thinking of him, himself and he with his mangled ankle which was delaying both of them.
There is no excuse for what he did. Maybe Shane is litlle psycho and such a bad ass but he is just a man. Otis was overweight and very heavy for Shane who must holding him [don't forget that Shane have injury his leg]. Shane must safe Carl, maybe he do it for Lori I don't care.
But he safes Carl and this is important. The problem with what Shane did is the cold-blood thinking of the action. One moment they are talking about remaining rounds and then "BAM"! The only way it could be justified would be if he had shot Otis in the head and released him from the impending suffering from the jaws of the zombies. But even that was inconceivable by Shane. It was a coward's action. I think it was an extremely cold blooded thing to do, I was literally sitting there with my mouth open in disbelief, I understand that he felt he had to get back to save Carl, but I really think there was a better way.
Some of you are condoning this merciless act of cold-bloodiness and trying to convince yourselves that what he did was heroic and justified but its not, he murdered that man and enjoyed it!!! He didn't care that that man was gonna suffer a horrible death as long as he was the sole survivor! Shane was the one slowing Otis down as mentioned on here. Otis was holding his own just fine, being "overweight" has nothing to do with him being left behind in the end!
Shane wanted to outdo Rick and look good in Lori's eyes! He would never knowingly put his life in danger unless there was something in it for him, while Rick who was weak after giving his dying child blood was willing to sacrifice himself to get those supplies!
Look what the result was after this, she wanted him to stay, a friggan psycho who nearly raped her and almost shot Rick when they were alone though no one but Dale saw this and that idiot still cared about him remaining in the group.
Lori doesn't deserve a courageous man like Rick she deserves a homicidal coward like Shane, she strikes me as the selfish one who wants to have her cake and eat it too! If the shit hit the fan and we were all sitting in an undead Apocalypse I think I'd rather have a courageous, selfless person like Rick or Daryl watching my back than some lunatic who'd sell his own grandmother!!!
I must add, I hope Shane gets used as zombie bait someday I kinda wish Otis became a zombie and the hunter in him tracked down Shane and had him for lunch! Revenge lol :D. True justice indeed. You get him, Zombie Otis!
Now, though I'm not completely sure. My opinion has been swayed just a little bit by all the comments here. I was never angry at him about it in the 5 minutes it took from the episode's end to getting here , but all the 'use him as zombie bait' comments have triggered my defense mechanism and I'll now be forced to side with him. I should not find that amusing. I think people are judging Shane too harshly. Think about it. What if you were in Shane's position?
You're running with Otis, and your loved ones are waiting for the items you are carrying. One of them is most likely going to die if you don't get there in time. It's a life or death situation, and you're pretty sure you won't both make it out alive. You've already offered Otis your bag and told him to go, but he won't leave without you.
The zombies are coming faster and faster, and you both only have one bullet left. You are absolutely positive you won't both make it out alive. The zombies are getting closer and closer. You've got two options. Try to make it to car with Otis and risk the fact that you both might die.
Be honest, what option would you take? It might make me cold, but if I honestly thought at the time that we weren't both going to make it, I would shoot Otis. Every time. I don't want to die and I don't want my loved ones dying either. With the time it took for Shane to take down Otis and get his bag, they probably would have made it to car by then.
But I still won't judge Shane for it because he probably really thought they both wouldn't make it. The only problem I have with what Shane did is that he didn't shoot Otis in the head. He could have made the struggle easier and given Otis a painless death. The will to survive is strong
