Why music inspires people

So we know that we might want a little bit more upper midrange in that record, because that upper midrange area is actually going to make the record sound like it hurts a little bit. And if we do this effectively, the result is that when we listen to that piece of music, the record communicates effectively. So the opposite of this, of what I call emotional harmony — when all these things are communicating, are working towards this one single message and communicating effectively — the opposite of that is emotional disharmony.

And you think that this would not happen very commonly, but it actually happens all the time. Maybe the emotion is love. And so what happens is when we listen to that record, the record is telling us two different things. It fails to connect with the listener emotionally, and it fails to inspire. I want you to start thinking about every decision you make within the music making process in the context of emotion. You maybe want to write it down and start thinking about every move you make in the music-making process as a means to support and anchor that emotion that you defined up front.

And when you can do this, when you can start thinking about each decision you make as supporting that underlying message, the records that you make are going to communicate much more effectively.

For example, when I exercise I prefer to listen to rock or metal. It gets me pumped up and ready to do something. When I am feeling down I listen to country music which strangley puts me in a better mood. If I am feeling up beat and in a jolly mood I like to listen to new age pop or back in the day pop, such as Prince, Eminem, The Backstreet Boys.

I zone out and get lost in the tunes. I know ima have a good game when i listen to my favorite artist. The music that inspires me is rap when they are taking about them working hard to get where their are at now. Also how much harder you have to work to keep that spot. It really inspires me to work hard to get what I want in life and stay focused on my dreams.

I can listen to just about any type of music to inspire me. If i were excercising I would listen to music that would give me energy. The music that i listen to the most and the music that i think inspires me the most is country music. I think it is because i grew up listening to it and that is really the only type of music i listen to now that i am older. It doesnt really inspire me to do things its just easier for me to do things when im listening to country music.

For example, i work on homework and classwork better and faster when im listening to it and i work better outside or in my house when i have country music on to listen to. I like to listen to love songs and some faster songs. It all depends on my emotions and how i feel at that moment and time. I can adapt to different type of music just by understanding the meaning and point behind the song. My playlist for insporation consists of a couple different types of music.
